How do you pick a hair stylist?

Thank you all so much for all the great advice! I'll make sure to post the before/after picture when I find someone I like! 
Might sound like a very silly question but I have no idea how to look for a hair dresser. Of course I can google "hair dressers close to me" and just pick one but... how do you pick? 
My hair is pretty long (about tailbone length) and kind of curly (I would guess somewhere between a 2C and 3A). The rare times I get a haircut I usually feel disappointed in how I look, usually the hairstyle looks great while my hair is straight (they always straighten my hair after the cut) but as soon as I wash it and it gets back to curly it doesn't seem to quite fit.
So any tips on how to find a hairdresser you like? What are some questions I should ask? Do you go with a particular request/picture or ask for their recommendation?

If looking on google I go by reviews good and bad and what they specialize in as well as looking at there hair. Great stylist always have healthy looking hair. My number one is if a stylist isn't asking questions about your hair like what you doing to it,when's your last cut,what are you looking to achieve, it's a no for me if they not asking questions. I need someone who cares about my hair just as much as I do. Good luck.

I would always try and get a recommendation and then go for a consultation - certainly most places where I am will do a free consult.  Look at their own hair and have a good talk about what you want and make sure you like what they have to say... if you need low maintenance then make sure they aren’t trying to talk you into something that’s going to be loads of work etc if you don’t get a good feeling or vibe then don’t feel pressured into making an appointment.  Also check prices... are they too good to be true/overpriced and making you pay for an “experience” etc

Find someone who cuts and styles while hair is curly

I usually just look at ig look for hashtags with your city & curly hair, if you go with somebody that does only curly hair they might charge you more but I think it’s well worth it , I have curly hair too . They usually cut it dry so you can see how it looks in it’s natural form . I also check on their prices . I get like 4 hairdressers that I like & text them or do a free consultation to see if they can do what I’m asking & how much they would charge me .

Honestly, I’ve found the older women know how to deal with my very curly hair, and the younger ones don’t. That’s just my experience. So, I usually aim for those women. If they start stating that they want to do anything I know will mess my hair up, I’m outta that chair 😂 I’ve had it butchered too many times. Once I find a good one, I’m not leaving them. A lot of salons list photos online/social media now, and you can always get referred by someone with a great stylist. Try asking around!
