OB said they are going to do some kind of sweep for bacteria?? He said it’s important.

It’s to check to see if you’re positive for Group Strep B. It’s a bacteria that is harmless for adults but can be really dangerous for baby. It can be passed to baby as it leaves the birth canal during labor. So they will swab inside the vagina and see if you are positive for the bacteria in late pregnancy. If so, you will get antibiotics when you are in labor. If you’re not, then you don’t worry about it. It’s super common to be positive, but important to know.

If you’re having a vaginal birth they do a sweep of your vagina and anus for a certain type of bacteria. From memory 1 in 4 women have it but don’t quote that statistic. 
It’s 100% safe for you but it can cause infections for the baby. The treatment is just to have a drip put in with antibiotics while you’re in labour.

Swab not sweep. For group b strep. It’s not a big deal. If they find that you have it, they’ll give you antibiotics during delivery so it doesn’t infect the baby.
