I would say it’s whoever wants to have communication. If the father wants to try to communicate it’s his job. If the kids want to communicate it’s their job and if he doesn’t respond then they should move on.

I wanna know who the hell are these .8% of people thinking it’s the kids responsibility to reach out to a whole ass ADULT. No child should have to beg to have a relationship with their parent. Their father is the one who fucked up and abandoned them. It’s his responsibility to fix it and reach out. Or at least make amends to them or explain himself even if he still doesn’t plan on being apart of their lives. I wouldn’t reach out to someone who makes it clear they didn’t want a relationship with me unless it was to tell them to kick rocks.

I always felt like I had to reach out to my mom and her family growing up. The older I got, the more I understood that’s not my job. Once I stopped reaching out, I haven’t heard from my mom or her family in almost two years. Nothing on birthdays, nothing on holidays, nothing on my wedding, nothing when I announced I was pregnant. But they still expect me to reach out to them. 
It is never the child’s job.

If he doesn’t want to be in the kids life then he doesn’t have to be. If he dad doesn’t want to but the kid does then it’s the kids job. If both want then does it matter? Personally it’s between the kid and the parent and nobody else.

I’ve never been through this so I couldn’t say what I’d do if I were the child. Now if I were the mom, I’d tell my kid who their dad is, if they want to contact him, they are free to do so, he’d also be free to reach out to them BUT I wouldn’t allow him in the kids life if I knew he was going to be in and out of it. I think it’s the dads responsibility to try to reach out and have a relationship with their child. If they don’t then there isn’t much the kid can really do
