Gestational Diabetes Help...

Rachel

Hello!

I am a FTM who was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes about four weeks ago. My fasting numbers are the only numbers I can't seem to get under control no matter what they have me do so far and I'm getting frustrated.

I understand that there are risks to the baby if I am unable to get my sugars under control. They want my fasting to be <95 and I have NEVER hit this number. I've ranged from 96-114, currently on 500mg of Metformin at night which did nothing to alter these numbers, and I have tried everything else they've wanted me to do.

I am not comfortable taking the Metformin when my numbers are so close to being correct. No one has said anything about my baby being too big or that anything appears to be wrong with him. I have NO symptoms of GD other than the raised sugar levels and have done nothing but lose weight this entire pregnancy and I'm currently 32wks on Sunday. It makes me feel like the doctors are not looking at ME but the average, and what if I don't fit the average?

So, I guess I'm hoping to hear from other moms who were diagnosed with GD and their outcomes. Were you able to control all your numbers? Was your fasting number constantly off and everything was fine? Or did your baby have any of the side effects they warn about?

The specialist I spoke to today wanted me to jump up to 1500mg of Metformin and I am NOT okay with that. I hate taking medication to begin with and failing to see the need for it. I'm tempted at this point to cancel all these GD appointments and just keep my numbers in check as best I can on my own... doctors have always failed me, and as much as I want to trust them, this is my first successful pregnancy and I don't want to bring any harm to my rainbow baby...

So, please share your stories with me. I feel they'll be much more beneficial then whatever textbook answer I get from everywhere else...

Thank you.
