Do you believe in cultural appropriation?

Jam Jar

Let me put an example out there:

Your ancestral country was colonised by the British government and colonial propaganda has created a deep rooted prejudice between the people within your country (so the people would blame each other instead of the colonisers) and put the world under the illusion that your culture doesn’t exist and left your nations identity shattered.

However, 60 years after independence, your country is still confused about its own identity and hasn’t healed and the last strands of your culture such as specific foods (some of the only things you’re allowed to claim as your own) start to become marketed as British and taken out of their cultural context, mispronounced and misused to the point where you can’t claim anything as your county’s anymore without inciting more hatred and division between your own people and neighbouring countries.

It’s deeper and more damaging than cultural appreciation.

I see so many people online who disregard cultural appropriation because they haven’t experienced it and don’t know the fear of their cultural identity slipping away and being misrepresented.

Whilst I’m here, 🧿 holds cultural significance to a lot of people, it’s not a trend.

Rant over it just saddens me some of the insensitivity and lack of compassion out there, I wish people understood what cultural appropriation meant for my people because I never see the issue explained.
