Is fertility genetic?

Question

If your parents or your partners parents had a hard time conceiving (with no known fertility issues), does that make it for likely that you will too? Or vice versa, if one or both sides conceived quickly will you and your partner likely conceive quickly?

In my experience it has been, but based on science I have absolutely no idea. Both my parents and my husbands parents got pregnant with both of their children very quickly, and my husband and I conceived all 3 of our children very quickly as well. But again that’s just my own experience.

It is multi factorial... depending on the type it could be more or less genetically influenced, but it’s highly epigenetic.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Mostly, the answer is no. It depends what condition is causing fertility issues. My mom has some of the same PCO indicators that I have, and she produced multiple kids in consecutive years. I told my RE I was probably hyper fertile (jokingly) and he said “that’s not usually how it works”. Turns out the PCO really did make me hyper-fertile, leading to a ridiculously high number and high quality egg collection. My husband had cancer and is now sterile. People with serious conditions that require extensive treatment are at higher risk for fertility problems. If you do have genetic cancers and such, I guess that could be considered a (future) genetic fertility issue. There are plenty of inheritable conditions that can cause fertility decline. There are also a ton of environmental causes. As a whole, you shouldn’t base your chances off of how fast your siblings and parents were able to get pregnant.

In my case no. My parents struggled to get pregnant and stay pregnant without any fertility issues. I am their only child. Took them 2 years to conceive me with multiple losses before and after.  I have adenomyosis and endometriosis and conceived my daughter our second cycle.

It depends on the reason for infertility. My whole family has endometriosis and had a hard time, so for us yes it is.
