I’m an OT; remember, a word doesn’t have to be said perfectly or completely to count as a word. All children develop at a different rate- try not to compare (I know it’s hard).

This poll didn’t make me feel great 😬 we don’t have any clear words yet. Knows a ton of words, body parts, follows directions but is only babbling. I’ve self referred him for assessment but doctor isn’t concerned.

I think it’s different for all babies at this age-they develop at different rates and it doesn’t start leveling out until later. My son “speaks” a lot, but it’s not always recognizable words. I always say he has his own “words” that represent words. They don’t necessarily all sound like the words he is trying to say, but they represent a word. Like he will say “pat pat” when talking about his pacifier (aka paci)-he points to it and knows what it is. He calls it that because he has heard me say “paci” but he can’t quite get those sounds together. I know what he is trying to say, and I just repeat it back to him. I am assuming they just learn by listening and repetition 🤷🏻‍♀️

My child is abnormal on the opposite side of the spectrum. He says maybe 40-50 words. But he also has an older sister to watch and listen to. Our first was not this far along. We had to go to therapy at 15 months for our first just to get her to walk. She had about 2-3 words at this age. They all develop differently as mentioned before. Definitely don’t stress yet. And early intervention and therapy is great! It helped our daughter a ton. She’s a normal 3yr old now!! Besides not wanting to poop on the potty lol.

Our doc only expected one word plus mama and dada at 15 months. She said at 18 months they expect three extra ones. 
She said trying to say it counts even if it’s not the word. As long as we can tell what she’s trying to say. So doooo for dog for example.
