Have you had genetic testing done? Have you met with any specialists? Breast and ovarian cancers run in my family. My mother is a genetic carrier. My sister, cousins and I have done the genetic testing. My sister and one cousin are also carriers and have regular, very thorough check-ups with specialists. Once they are done having babies and breastfeeding, they both plan to have bilateral mastectomies and full hysterectomies. This is currently the best way to reduce the risks for these cancers. My mother also had both procedures done after much conversation with her doctors. It’s currently being recommended to have the procedures done around the age of 40 for genetic carriers. However, there has been progress made with a breast cancer vaccine. We are hopeful that the women in our family can get involved in a trial before resorting to surgery. Meet with your doctor, discuss genetic testing, make your decision along with your medical professionals based on your risk factors. I know that it’s all terrifying. It was the biggest shock when I learned that I am not a carrier. It’s so prevalent in my family, that I assumed I would also have it. It was a great relief to know that I cannot pass this on to my children. I really think it’s best to know. Good luck to you.

Did the test come back that you had genetic markers that indicate a higher risk for cancers? I ask because getting a voluntary hysterectomy without a medical reason or results from a genetic test showing that you’re high risk might be difficult. Especially if you’re in the US and hoping that insurance will cover it. Even with the genetic testing, it can be difficult to get the insurance to approve the procedure. I’d say meet with your gynecologist and discuss your worries as well as the process to getting the procedure approved. It might also be tricky to find a doctor willing to perform the procedure without medical cause. I completely understand the desire to do this after what you’ve been through. I just want you to be prepared for the speed bumps you might encounter. Most likely they’ll recommend increased visits and testing due to your family history.

Do you have kids? Unfortunately I think they don’t allow you to have one unless you have a certain amount of kids and are a certain age. Crazy. I’m not sure what the exceptions are though like having cancer run so close in the family
