Miscarriage, ectopic, or just early?

Question

My last period was 6 weeks and 5 days ago but ovulation was 3 weeks ago. I went for an ultrasound yesterday and they weren't able to see the baby. The doctor didn't sound hopeful and took some blood. Today I got a call back and my HCG numbers were at 11,900.
Could I just be early? Has anyone experienced this before?
I have a bit of hope left but I'm being open minded.

I’m sorry that you’re going through this confusion but At 1500 hCG in your bloodstream you should be able to see something on a transvaginal ultrasound something like a gestational sac. Your hCG is pretty high I wonder if they would repeat an ultrasound if you would see something then. Best of luck￼

Surely if you only ovulated 3 weeks ago, they couldn’t expect to see anything now? Your HCG is high too isn’t it? Higher than mine anyway.
