I've never flushed them. My parents made sure to tell me not to because it would cost them a lot of money to fix the septic tank

I've done so for several decades with no backups, no plumbing problems, nothing. 
Maybe it depends on how weak or strong your plumbing is and weather or not you are connected to a sewer or septic tank.

i was always taught not to flush tampons or pads, ever. clogged pipes are expensive.

Your not suppose to flush ANY part of a tampon!! They go in a bun. It down the toilet

I work for a sewage treatment plant and the biggest problem we have is people flushing wet-wipes down the toilet. It clogs the sewer pipes and causes literal sewage backups where raw sewage flows out of the manhole, down the street & into peoples basements or into nearby lakes/rivers/etc 🤢 
I see dozens of tampon applicators and condoms in the sewage settling tanks, it’s really gross & wears down the pipes & pumps over time
