No first trimester scans?!

I went to my first OB appointment today. They took my vitals and gave me some handouts, that's it. They said first trimester scans are unnecessary unless there are problems like pain or bleeding. Typically they don't do any scans until 20 weeks. Has anyone else gotten this response? I'm kinda bummed.

They're safe-there is plenty of research. I went through an RE for infertility and can't graduate to a midwife until a strong heartbeat is detected so I always have early scans. It is the best way to determine the right due date as well. After nine weeks it's not as accurate. Also it confirms uterine pregnancy. So, in my opinion, it's a little odd not to have a quick scan for dating and uterine location.

It's good they said no! Medical intervention is best avoided unless it's necessary.  Who knows - maybe in 100 years they will look back at prenatal ultrasounds and say "I can't believe they did that- it's so bad for the baby!"

Kinda like what we say today about prenatal X-rays.

Back in the day, they were all totally convinced that prenatal X-rays were fine and good to use.

Biggest lesson from medical history...... Minimize your use of medicine if you can!

In the UK we have a scan at 12 weeks as 12-14 weeks is when they can diagnose Downe syndrome, birth defects and other abnormalities early as well as dating your due date.

With my first pregnancy I had a full on physical exam and ultrasound. This time I got a bunch of handouts. I guess I was searching for a piece of mind, I really would have liked to hear the heartbeat. I guess we'll have to wait!

I have my first scan tomorrow to confirm my due date. That's just how my office does it. They want to be sure the due date they gave me is correct. They did the same with my first pregnancy, as well.

Most insurances only cover 1 ultrasound. Unless it's medically necessary

It really depends on where and what country you live in. I can totally understand your dissapointment, but try to look at the bright side...everything's going so great they don't find it medically necessary. Maybe you can look into finding a place that offers private scans for an affordable fee?
