Indefinitely definition

I overheard some dude the other day say that he and his girlfriend have decided to break up indefinitely. And I got stuck on the word indefinitely. What does indefinitely mean to you? I’ve always seen people use it as a way to say forever, but those two words seem to have varying definitions. Sorry, I’m a nerd and just curious how the general population uses it.
