Have you ever believed that females couldn’t friends with each other because of the media?

Question

If you used to believe this then when did you unlearn it?
Do you have any close female friendships that defy the media’s portrayal of women competing, being jealous of each other and struggling with civility? 
Do you think that in many instances girls actually struggle to make friends with other girls because the media teaches us that’s it’s the norm not to get along?
I wish there was a female version of ‘bromance’ in film and tv because the idea of males being close and uplifting each other is great but it’s soooo idolised in fandoms. I just wish women got the same representation because onscreen female duos always seem to involve a level of competitiveness and snarkyness.

I went through a thankfully brief, I’m not like other girls phase when I was younger. 
Aside from that embarrassing chapter, no I’ve always had strong friendships with other women. 
The media likes to drag women in general, but there’s some really good friendship centered stories out there too. I really enjoyed the new Netflix Babysitters Club as one example. 
Also, “females” makes my very soul shudder.

In my experience I think the media & culture influenced the opposite with me & my friends of all genders.
Be a good girl, always forgive everyone, don’t get upset or angry, get along with everyone, don’t cause drama, blah blah blah and I definitely kept friends I shouldn’t have due to these idealized beliefs and lack of boundaries.
Being older now, I realize keeping people in my life that were terrible was and is my responsibility.  
I don’t like the idea that women can’t be friends with women and I equally don’t like the idea of idealizing friendships...because real, true friendships are few and far between when you learn not to tolerate crappy behaviour.

Never used social media as a reason for why I don’t have many female friends. In my experience the female friends I would talk shit behind my back or be fake in general. Also being bullied by women didn’t make me feel rainbows and sunshine towards them.

No, not really based on media, but perhaps culture. I’ve always been more interested in more “boy” things, so I wanted to play with the boys. 
Until I was older and gender lines have slowly blurred, I’ve found connections more. Tomboys were not a common thing when I was young, so the idea that I couldn’t be friends with girls wasn’t based on their gender but on strict gender roles. 
Although I believe media is influential, it is also a mirror on society.

I have never needed the media to tell me that girls/women constantly compete with each other and try to tear each other down. My first major run-in with that was in the 5th grade at a sleepover birthday party. I had a front row seat to a show of nasty behaviour that still boggles my mind. I watched my friends go after each other over the birthday girl's little brother, who I think was five years old at the time. Things got so bad that my friend's mother separated everybody. I absented myself and read a book until mum came to pick me up. No media involved, just girls doing what they do. 😬

I've never believed women couldn't be friends with other women. While I have male friends, my closest friends are women and always have been. 
Some there are certain storylines in the various forms of media that portray competitiveness or rivalry, there are plenty that depict close friendships among women. Steel Magnolias is a classic. First Wives Club. The Women. Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Gilmore Girls. And many more where friendships are depicted when if not at the center of the storyline. Additionally, many "bromance" story lines do depict competitiveness in men's friendships as well, just differently than what is depicted in women's friendships.

I dont have social media anymore. But when i did my friends list was a bunch of family and high school people. The females uplifted me and i did the same. Never had a negative issue of a female on Facebook etc. Or Instagram.

I have never heard or thought of this in my life. I’ve just never really had female friends because it was too hard to relate to them. While I’m female myself, I was raised by my father and very Tom-boy so most females I met were very feminine and just didn’t get along with me because I wanted to be out getting my hands dirty and they couldn’t fathom doing such a thing. The media never swayed me in any way shape or form. The thought never would have crossed my mind.

No. Because if you follow media portrayals women can't be friends with men either because we all know if a female and a male are friends sex is a 100% inevitable event. So if women can't be friends with women and women can't be friends with me we must be friendless except for our family members. Some women gravitate towards female friends, some gravitate towards male friends, some have an even mix. It depends on personality. I have a ton of guy friends and a ton of girl friends. I compete (friendly wise) with some and others we don't because every relationship is different. If anyone thinks their friendships will be like a tv show or movie they are in need of a wake up call. Same as people who get disappointed their adult life isn't like How I Met Your Mother where everyone seems successful and able to afford a super nice life and go to the bar every night. That isn't real and most people don't get that life. Media is entertainment and entertainment only.
