Spanish speakers - ayudame por favor?

I’m not understanding the difference between este and esta. 
Here’s a couple examples of what I got wrong on duolingo.
Is there a good rule of thumb to follow that could help?

Este is masculine and esta is feminine

Hi, so as other people explained it has to be with the fact that they have gender, the feminine ones will end in A, D, ON, Z, IS, IE  or -UMBRE. And the masculine ones will end in O, L , N, E, R and S
Also usually they will have the article "LA" if feminine and "El" or "LO" if masculine.
I think there might be some words that are an exception to this but most of them will be easier to identify this way.

It's hard, honestly. just like portuguese and French for example, in Spanish nouns have genders. House is feminine - casa. So it would be "Esta casa". Place is masculine - lugar. So it would be "este lugar"

Este masculine if the noun is masculine you use este.. 
Most Spanish nouns are in feminine or masculine form..
Similar to using “el” or “la”
