Seizures, anyone...?

My dad is prone to seizures lately, but we don't know what's causing them. It really freaks me out when he has an episode and I get really worried. Our doctor didn't really inform us about what to do after the first one occurred. I already did some research about them, but since I still don't know much, I was wondering if someone could teach me a little more about them, things I need to look out for, and what I should do when he's having one? Hi Brittany. I am so sorry to hear what is going on. I understand how hard it can be, my mom has what is called onset epilepsy, she was completely fine until around age 35 when my younger sister was born. When your dad is having an episode it is important to stay calm. (Even though this can be so difficult) We usually hold my moms hand, and count to ten slowly, and then backwards from 10. As we do this, we remind her to take deep breaths. We continue counting until it has passed. When she is finished she normally is tired and feeling "out of it" and wants to sleep. If your dad does sleep, make sure you wake him a few times to make sure he's okay. (Ask him if he knows who you are, his name, etc.) I know for my mom stress is a really big contributing factor, so we try to keep her as stress free as possible. So with seizure you want to make sure that he doesn't hurt him self, so when he has a seizure you want to make sure that he's laying down flat and try to like hold him so that he doesn't hit his head or anything like that. My dog has seizure and I know humans are different than dogs but it's happens for the same reasons. Seizure can be controlled by medication if they get bad. Putting cold compress helps my dog so maybe it will help your dad. Look into it more , and ask your doctor about it . Also when he's having a seizure keep track on how long it last for. And how often he has a seizure.

I had a seizure myself, 8 or so years ago! There are a lot of different types of seizures out there, has your dad had an EEG test done yet? If not, Id suggest that first! They will diagnose the seizure type and be able to identify things that might trigger the seizures.  Some basic things to remember when someone is having a seizure, remain calm!! Talk to he/she the entire time, letting them know it's ok, try to keep them on their side, watch so they don't choke on blood if they bite their tongue or vomit, watch so they don't swallow their tongue, and try to watch how long it lasts, if it's over several minutes then call 911, most importantly make sure they are breathing! I know it sounds crazy, but mine was so severe that I was actually pronounced dead on arrival and they said if it wasn't for my mom giving me mouth to mouth, I wouldn't be here! Seizures are common, but nothing to take lightly! Id visit the neurologist first and go from there! :)

If you live in an area where there are ticks, lymes disease can be a cause of seizures that people including doctors don't often think of. Have him get tested for that. I was a lifeguard for 3 years and we were taught about first aid and seizures. All you can do is make sure he is safe. Make sure there is nothing around that he can hit his head on, or if you are able to, put a pillow under his head as well. Just try to keep him from hitting anything with his arms and legs as well. When he is finished seizing, roll him onto his side and use his leg as a kickstand and his arm as a pillow, this could keep him from choking if he vomited or there is any fluid in the mouth this can also be done while he is seizing if possible. Don't give him anything to eat or drink until he is FULLY awake and alert. Then help him get to a comfortable place to rest. It's definitely hard to stay calm, but you have to do the best you can. Like some others said, count and/or talk to him throughout it.

I have seizures myself. Mine are caused by low blood sugar, so I always have to make sure I eat regularly and take my medication. When I get shaky is when one could come.
