How to discipline right? (My son is 20 months)

I need help. My son has recently last couple months started throwing tantrums over every little thing. He throws himself in the floor he will hit or throw his body backwards if I try to get on his level and talk to him about it. He is getting bad. He will scream bloody murder pure anger. I want to discipline him but need good ways for his age. Any suggestions would help :(

it’s kinda tough age because they’re really starting to have their first complex emotions but they’re also way too young to understand that they’re having big feelings AND to top it all of they can’t communicate how they want/need to anymore. only thing that got me through it with my son was breathing exercises (practice them when they aren’t having a tantrum so they know how to do it). the BRAT method helps a lot to control my feelings during a tantrum so i Breathe, Recognize what what the child is doing and say it out loud, Acknowledge their feelings, Tame by offering suggestions on how to calm down. if all else fails, it’s okay to let them cry and scream and be mad, sometimes it’s not even about the toy they wanted they just need to let it all out. i use to sit by him and say things like “i know you’re frustrated, mommy’s going to sit here until you’re ready to talk and then we can figure this out together.” now that he’s older when he gets frustrated like that and he knows he needs alone time he’ll go in his room and say “i need 5 minutes” lol it’s a lot of trial and error but you’ll find a way that works for the both of you eventually.

If my daughter isnt in the mood to talk about it, I get down with her and throw my own "tantrum" usually it gets her to stop and switch focus because she's trying to make sure I'm okay. Then we talk about it. Are you sad? Are you angry? Why do you feel that way? What are some better ways we can handle it next time? Do you need a hug? Usually the answer is yes and she's done. (She'll be 3 on Friday.)

I ignore my son when he throws fits.  He stops quickly when he realizes no one is watching him.  I will admit though that he doesn’t tantrum often or in public.  Ignoring it would definitely be harder in public.
