Me and my boyfriend have been
Together for about 7 years , we tend to argue a lot about finances and bills . He’s self employed but he can sometimes
Make double what I make a month depending on his sales. I work full time at a hospital.  (We’re thinking about getting married soon). With him
Making more than me at times should the bills/expenses be split 50/50 or should he pay more than 50% of the bills ?

I'd just put all the earnings into a shared account and pay the bills out of that. Nothing to argue about if everything is shared and no one is keeping tabs on who did this or that or how to make it 'fair'

I make more than my husband but he still has enough to cover our bills so he uses his checks for that and I use mine to pay down our debt. If you don’t have any debt, he should help more with the bills. Whatever it takes to make sure they’re paid even if that’s more than 50/50. Since you’re considering marriage, it’s a partnership. You’re in this together. So if he doesn’t want to help with expenses, that’s a red flag to me.

If you go 50/50 then he should be saving money when he makes good money  to keep covering his share during months he doesnt make sales. Otherwise yes he should pay more or cover the entire bills during good times for him so thatbwaybwhen u hve to cover its even.

Personally I believe when you're married you are one and don't have separate anything. We have a joint account that all the money goes in to. It also makes the bills easier to pay when it comes from one lump sum. But I do know people who have separate accounts and each person is responsible for certain bills. That seems like way too much to keep up with 😆

50/50 on what bills you guys SHARE (housing, food, electricity ect.) I would not pay the bills he has for things that are just for him and vice versa. If you guys were married I’d say 50/50 everything.

It depends really.
When we lived in London we started off 50/50 but one day I sat him down and we did a spreadsheet of all expenses and our income and it showed that at the end of all of the bills for the month I had £50 left over and so then he paid more pro rata as he earned more.
Moved back to NZ to get married and we set up joint accounts and get paid into those and then pay the bills and then a small amount of spending money is transferred into our own accounts for discretionary spending. Having everything joint makes you way more accountable in your spending so we have saved a lot more money doing it this way. I also used an accounting company that works with you on your goals (getting a house deposit) and you have monthly meetings together and they track how you are going and often tell the spender (my hubby) off when they don’t stick to the agreed plan. It worked a dream for me, yes I was having to pay someone to tell my hubby off but it meant no bad arguments for us as a couple over money which for me was worth the investment.

Me and my husband work as a team, we're constantly switching money from one account to the next, his money is mine and my money is his. There is no fighting over who pays what, if he made more that paycheck he pays more than me. But I we each pay our own cars credit cards etc. Unless we're struggling

I would work with each other. If only one of you can save money, then maybe reallocate your bills so you can both save. I make more than my husband so I take on the bigger bills. But we can still both save. When it comes to the more unpredictable items, we communicate with each other on how each of our finances are looking for that month and whoever is better positioned will take the bill.
