How rare is it for the umbilical cord to get wrapped around some part of baby?

Someone mentioned to me that they had a friend whose baby had the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck so she had to deliver right away (thankfully he was okay) but now this is such a fear of mine. I had an ultrasound today and he was chewing on the cord and had it in his mouth, so now I’m worried it could get stuck in there or something. How common is that? I know I’ve seen instances where the cord wraps around a hand or something and the baby is born without it, not sure if I should worry about things like this too. I’m almost 30 weeks and a bit of a worrier. I’m excited to have him here on the outside where I can at least see what’s going on lol

The cord getting wrapped around the neck is pretty common and not usually that big of a deal. Obviously really bad cord accidents are possible, but very rare. Also the cord getting wrapped around the limb and causing it to be lost is not common.

All 3 of my little brothers were born with the cord around their necks and all were fine.

My OB said it happens and that it’s really only a concern when you start delivering and the cord get tighter.

My midwife and OB assured me that “cord around the neck” is not so much a complication as an eventuality. The baby, at some point, will likely have the cord wrapped around some part of its body. During delivery, it takes two seconds to unwrap the cord. The baby is still getting oxygen just fine and it is not typically cause for concern.

My daughters cord was wrapped around her neck 3 times, she wasn’t breathing when she came out but was shortly after they placed her on my chest

My son had it wrapped around his neck like a scarf from like 30 weeks on. He was even chewing on it in an ultrasound lol

It’s quite common. Baby ha limited space and rolls around, so they can get wrapped in it. But it is not common that it gets wrapped tight. My second was born with his cord around his neck and no one knew until I pushed his head out. Basically they said stop pushing, they slipped it off and I pushed again and out he came. In my case, he wasn’t breathing on his own right away but was alert and looking around. The nurse said he was just a little stunned from the quick delivery. They gave him some oxygen and gave him back to me. My sisters baby HD the cord around his neck at 20 weeks so they watched him closely all pregnancy to make sure it didn’t get to tight to obstruct blood flow. They slipped it off when she delivered, and he was breathing fine and went right on her chest.
