While in a relationship off and on, dating other ppl etc. but some how seem to keep a situationship between the two for 18 1/2 years.

Where is the "you don't" choice. You're worth more than someone who doesn't want you. Love yourself. Then find someone who loves you more than that.

I like the "as long as it takes" option.  As long as it takes is also known as "until he finds someone he wants to be in an actual relationship."

And, as much as I'd like to say I wouldn't do this, I'm guilty of committing this offense on more than one occasion, each spanning over a year.

I don't. When I set my heart on my SO I told him I wanted to be with him and he wasn't ready then we wouldn't be sleeping together. And that was with no pressure just told him flat out that it would hurt me to mess around then lose him. 18.5 years is ... insane to me. That's an entire lifetime in relationshipland. 18 years? We'd better be married, have kids, a home, a life. That's far too long to let someone walk all over you! Walk. There are a million men looking to scoop you up and dedicate themselves to only you, in a timely fashion.

After my sons father abandoned us and threaten me blah blah blah i had a pretty had time then when my son was 2 i dated a man who led me on and was emotionally unavailable after 3yrs i left him and became pretty cold.  I was a rough person to be around i showed love for my son and parents and that was it.  I had a few guys that wanted more even one that sent me gifts which i returned for abouy 2 years this was status quo.  When i met my now husband it took a year to date and for me to lose the edge.   So honestly for some this works.
