I don’t like saying my kids are sick when they’re not, I feel like it’s tempting fate I’d something. 
I have zero issues saying that I’m sick though!!

Instead of saying they’re sick, I usually just say I don’t have a babysitter. It works every time lol

My mom used to do that if we didn't have power or water for days at a time so she wouldn't have to deal with not having a shower or electricity to get ready for work or us ready for school
