Beach/outdoor play pen or tent?

Anyone use either of these or have a different recommendation for a 1 year old?

We have the Pacific Breeze tent for the beach to use for our whole family, but for an outdoor play pen we have the Summer Infant pop n play. I have never taken our pop n play to the beach because I think the sand would come right through the mesh sides, but I love the pop n play for our backyard or for picnics in the park.
