At what age do you start putting your child in a booster seat?

My son is turning 5 in October I know he still needs to be in a car seat, but by the age of 6 do I switch him into a booster seat? Or around what age is recommended for a booster seat?

I’d keep them in a 5 point as long as possible as it’s safest. It’s not just about size, but maturity as well. Are they mature enough to sit properly the entire drive? I just talked to my kids doctor and she said since theyre 40lbs i could switch them to a booster if i wanted too. But if it isn’t bothering them its safe to keep them in the whole carseat. Ima wait for them to turn 5. Then ill just use booster.

The AAP recommendation is that children remain in a rear facing car seat for as long as possible until they max out the weight or height limits of their seat. My oldest is 5 and still rear facing. When they rear her the rear facing limits of their seat, they should be kept forward facing in a 5-point harness until they max out the weight or height limits of the seat. Children should not be using a belt positioning booster until they have maxed out the forward facing harnessed limits of their seat. It is recommended that this be when they are at least 4 feet 9 inches tall and between 8-12 years old.
