My fertility specialist wants to run tests before starting Letrozole.. He suggests an HSG which is expensive and my GYN thinks it's overkill. Do I have to go through with the HSG? I already know I'm anovulatory.

Personally I would follow the direction of the fertility specialist. I have been thru all of this myself. Yes it’s expensive, but in order to correctly treat you they need to figure out/ eliminate variables that may be contributing to your difficulty conceiving. I did both the hsg and a bubble test in addition to a ton of lab work and a semen analysis for my husband before meds were even an option. These meds can do more damage then good in some situations. Over time they thin out the lining of your uterus which makes implantation a problem. Even though it sounds like you know ovulation is a problem this mayn’t be the only one. I found that out the hard way after going thru all this stuff and using meds and iui 7 rounds and having 4 early losses. Once I started seeing a fertility specialist, I found that IVF was our best chance and first cycle was a success. As much as I trust and appreciate my OB, this isn’t there area of specialty.

I would highly recommend it. They discovered through my hsg that I had right sided hydrosalpinx with my tube. I had to have that tube removed. They will properly be able to treat you if you do all the testing to eliminate any issues.

Thank  you all ladies!! I talked to my husband about it qnd told him that I decided to go ahead and go through with the test! Crossing my fingers. I almost think I'd rather have a blocked tube rather than not know why I'm not ovulating at all after Mirena for 1.6 years.

I think that’s normal and it makes sense to have all the testing before treatment. That’s what my OB had me do. If you had blocked tubes (which the hsg would detect), there would be no point in going ahead with the medication and you’d just be wasting your time. Some people also say they had more luck in getting pregnant after having a hsg, so it’s probably worth a try.

You can say no. They can change the care plan based on that. There isn't always only one cause. Early on, I thought I was only annovulatory, but the issues turned out to be way more serious. I am glad I did further testing.

I paid $355 for and HSG test in south Texas this past April. Turns out it cleared a blockage for me, saving me money and time on further procedures. My friend who has having trouble TTC for years did her HSG and got pregnant twice back-to-back right after.

If your both tubes are blocked taking any medication that makes you ovulate is useless. You will need IVF to ever conceive. Additionally these medications are not without side effects. Clomid gives me horrible side effects. Why suffer side effects and strain your body for no reason whatsoever because without open tubes it is not gonna work in billion years.

I’m not sure why GYN would think it’s overkill it’s needed to determine what some other issue might be u never know there could be blockage and some insurance might cover it.  There is a lot of work up the fertility specialist needs to do  to make sure they are not ruling anything out.
