NIPT Out of Pocket?

Has anyone in the US gotten the NIPT and paid out of pocket? My insurance will only cover it if there's medical necessity and my doctor says there really isnt since I'm only 30. I'd really like to get it done to check if there are any concerns and find out the sex. I see such big ranges online about the out of pocket cost. How much did you pay? Was it worth it?

I went through my insurance since I was going to meet my deductible either way but when I went for it the lady asked if I wanted to pay privately which would have been around $60 or to just go through insurance. My insurance covered it fully so you may want to call and check (I’m 30 and not high risk). They charged my insurance $2,000 for it - crazy when I could have paid only $60 for it.

The 3rd party my OB uses offered a cash option of $350 for the test. The lab draw still came out of insurance.

i did mine and i’m 20 idk i just said yes to the test without thinking about it anyways i did it with Natera and they billed my insurance around $10,505 for the NIPT tests. I also did the carrier screening to see if I am a carrier for certain genetic abnormalities & it was $3,900. I paid $0, initially i was supposed to pay $600? can’t remember for the NIPT test but i filed a claim and then it went down to $0. My insurance paid for the carrier screening test for me since it fell under preventive care. Also with the NIPT test there’s an NT scan that comes with it depending on your doctor and a genetic counselor consultation, the NT scan was around $900 since mine was done at a maternal fetal medicine doctors office & my genetic counselor consultation was $200. It’s a two part test comes with the NT scan however some ppl don’t do that NT scan or genetic counseling. I said yes to everything since I have good insurance and majority of it was covered and it’s my first kiddo so saying no to any testing felt odd to me for some reason. If you choose to do it, make sure you don’t use your insurance it’s cheaper that way (at least for me for the actual NIPT test). I’m located in California

If you call the lab that the physician intends to use, they can give you the out-of-pocket costs. Certain companies will have discounts based on certain factors. Call their general line and usually you have to route to the billing side to ask the specifics.

Not US but In Canada it was $550 for just the minimal NIPT testing, but to have a higher accuracy rate for detecting downsyndrome and finding out gender early is so worth it!

Out of pocket for me would have only been $250. I did the Progenity test. Since I had a lot of general health issues in my family, my insurance did end up covering it.

In my area it was 285, I didn’t get it because I was low risk and other medical bills were adding up to be paid.
