Does your LO point?

Question

My son isn't a massive pointer. He points mainly to what he wants but we rarely see him point to something he wants to show us.

Yes. My LO doesn’t talk much so her main ways of communicating are pointing, leading (grabbing our hands and showing us), and nodding yes or no.

I said yes because he use to. But he doesn’t really anymore because hes vocal enough to ask for what he wants. He’ll say “banana or crackers please” so he doesn’t point at them. Or “water please” etc. so the pointing kinda disappeared when he started using his words more to ask because he didn’t have to run to the kitchen to point at a banana to ask for one.

My daughter is 20 months now and doesn’t really point to communicate. She’ll point at bubbles or reach for something she wants and screams (which I’ve seen is considered whole hand pointing) but that’s it. Her pediatrician was concerned at her 18 month appointment, but I don’t think she was completely listening to me so I am no longer concerned about it. My daughter has always been more of a verbal communicator (whining, crying, making noises, or saying “bubbles” for me to blow bubbles) so I stopped worrying about the pointing. I think taking the time to teach her nonverbal communication skills would be a waste when I could keep focusing our energy on developing more of the verbal skills.
