Drowsy but awake?

Question

How do you guys successfully put your baby down drowsy but awake?
If I don’t feed my baby to sleep, I will have to rock him forever (like 30 min+) to get him drowsy. He is getting so heavy that is hard. If I put him in the crib or bassinet awake he will just play until he cries.
Any suggestions??

“Drowsy” is such a non-specific term that it’s hard to achieve. We go for “awake but content” as that is easily determined. Personally we use wake windows so baby at 2 months right now is awake 45-60 mins before being laid down. He will usually put himself to sleep with his pacifier. At night he puts himself to sleep as well and sometimes doesn’t want the pacifier. It’s also totally normal for them to need a high level of assistance at this age too. My daughter never once put herself to sleep as a newborn so every baby is different. We always go over if he’s fussing and help him soothe (replacing pacifier, shushing, patting, picking up if necessary) but he’s pretty good at independent sleep.

My life changed when I discovered the Tommee Tippee Ultra Light pacifier! It’s the only pacifier that will stay in her mouth and she only spits it out when she’s done with it. I rock her until her eyes start to close (with or without paci) and then put her down. Usually if she is the paci she barely stirs and falls right to sleep. It’s like magic.

It could be a little too early to sleep train but usually it’s right after baby has closed their eyes. That way when you put them down they may be woken a little by the movement but sleepy enough to then drift off on their own

I don’t. I feed to sleep and hold upright for 20 minutes (reflux baby). I plan on sleep training at 6 months. This is what I did for my first and he’s been an awesome sleeper.

I took the taking cara babies course and it’s a game changer. First your baby has to actually be sleepy. If they’re not sleepy they’ll play and complain when you’re trying to make them sleep. Next, I swaddle
Before I rock her and out the sound machine on. When her eyes are closed i put her down she usually opens them when she realizes she’s moved but she’s too tired to argue about it lol we’ve been  getting much better sleep for the last 5 weeks since doing this. Good luck!
