I enjoy the position I have now but there isn’t a lot of room for long term career development / opportunities.

Another role has come up in the same office but within a different sub-team working under a different manager. This wouldn’t be a progression/regression at this point, more of a sideways move but I’m interested because I see a lot of opportunity to learn more about the company I work for and have some exposure to a wider range of activities/projects etc and more opportunities through this change.

I’ve never been in this position before though as the move to where I am now was one company to another. I want to express my interest in applying but I’m not sure if I’m better to have a conversation with my own manager firstly or to have a private word with the hiring manager? I’ve worked with the hiring manager on projects/tasks and trust her to be discreet if I ask her to be but I appreciate she would likely want to have a conversation with my manager.

I don’t have a fantastic relationship with my own manager, it’s amicable but it’s been fairly tense for a few years for a variety of reasons so I’m a bit nervous to approach it with her :/ there’s a lot going on in our own team right now and a lot coming up too so I feel like I’d be letting them down to consider changing roles.

Any advice? Or has anyone else gone through a similar process and what did you do?
