Cervical check for dilation

Has anyone had issues getting a cervical check for dilation? I know it’s different than a sweep but they start doing checks at 38 weeks and at first I didn’t want it but now might be changing my mind. I’ll talk this over with my doc but curious of everyone’s experience. Could checking dilation make you go into labor sooner?

Update: not wanting to but my photographer said it would help to get an idea at least of maybe when I’d go into labor, which I didn’t think was true. Just want to make sure them checking me isn’t going to cause an infection or something weird happen when / if they do check
