Normal or not?

My sister went to a regular check up and is 3 almost 4 cm dilated, fully effaced and the hospital sent her home because she’s not having contractions. Is this normal? I told her she should have stayed. She’s 39 weeks btw.

Totally normal. Hospitals have a criteria that they need you to meet to be admitted. And dilation and effacement alone don’t indicate active labor. You can dilate weeks before you have a baby. You need to be having contractions too. If your water breaks they will typically admit you regardless of dilation or contractions.

I think it depends on where you’re at. I got admitted at 2 cm here. But I was having contractions. I think if I remember correctly here it’s, 3 cm-4 cm or your water has broken. I have 3 kids and gotten my epidural at 4 cm. I can’t imagine going in after that.

I was having contractions off and on, was 5.5 cm dilated and 80% effaced for 2.5 weeks. They kept sending me home. Didn’t keep me until I tested positive for amniotic fluid and it’s a good thing they did bc I had her soon after :) but they won’t keep you if you aren’t in active labor.

The hospital doesn’t typically keep you for birth until you’re 6 cm dilated.
I was dilated at 3-4cm 80% effaced baby’s head in zero station with my first when I was 35 weeks.
