It’s really hot right now at our house so I was wearing shorts and a small crop top. I came out of my room and suddenly my dad (who always is in his underwear btw) looked at me and said: “We’re not on the beach u know” and I said: “you’re walking around in your underwear and you tell me this?!” And the he said “well I’m a man”

I feel mad and sexualized. Is what I’m feeling normal? I mean, we’re supposed to feel safe around our dads, not like this!!! Why does he think he can walk around in his underwear but I can’t wear a crop top?!!!

I don’t think he sexualized you. Sexualizing you would’ve been turning your outfit into something sexual in nature, he said beach. I think what he was trying to say is that he didn’t feel the outfit was appropriate for outside of the beach. Regardless, he’s wearing less clothes than you and it’s hot out so he really shouldn’t have had the nerve to say anything.

Dad's (& moms) are just protective, especially if you're underage. I was always big chested, so my mother was always pulling my shirt up growing up. It was annoying at the time, but with the amount of uncomfortable stares I received from men, I understood. I don't believe he sexualized you, rather his comment was misogynistic.

I don't know how to see this situation, him being a man is not a good reason to be in his underwear, I mean there's really nothing wrong with that, the thing that is wrong is trying to make you believe that because you are a woman you can't dress with a top and shorts with an hot weather. I think that’s just a dad thing. Mine wouldn’t allow me to wear spaghetti strap tank tops when I was younger. My husband also does this to our niece when she comes over showing more skin then she needs to. I don’t consider it THEM sexualizing. I consider it as them knowing how other men can be and not wanting us to be subjected to that. They also look at us as their little girls growing up and dressing their own way, they’re never prepared for that. I definitely wouldn’t feel unsafe around my dad if he ever made a simple comment like that.
