Advice on cutting off family?

Does anyone have any tips or advice on how to cut off a family member. If you’ve cut off a family member, how did you do it? What did you say?

Ok two stories. 
The first is my grandmother (dads mom). Her husband is terrible and turned her against us. I cut her off for five years because of how she treated my mother. Somehow, cutting her off worked and she actually changed her ways. Now we have a very surface relationship which she is happy with, and I’m ok with it because my dad isn’t stressed out. 
My other story are my aunts (moms sisters) … they are both incredibly toxic and abusive towards my mom. Finally my mom gathered up the courage to block them. I did the same!  Well after a while she unblocked them and they didn’t reach out or say happy birthday (we decided for my dad to text them on their birthdays to just see) … so yup, we are fine not talking with them or seeing them.

My husband and I cut off his dad and stepmom. They weren’t my biggest fan at all. My husband began by trying to establish boundaries. After this was unsuccessful, we cut them off. We did not call them or answer any of their calls. Same with texts. If we were invited somewhere that we knew that they would be, we politely declined… some people may not agree with that, but for us, we knew it would cause tension if we showed up at family Christmas or a birthday party, so we would see family members privately.

I just stopped talking to people. I never gave an explanation as to why. I just blocked their number and wiped my hands clean. By the time I get to the point of cutting people off I've done enough to try and remain civil, repair the relationship, and talk about my feelings so we can resolve whatever issue is going on. Once I give up I'm done. If they want an explanation they can figure it out for themselves

I cut off wayyyyy too many family members😂 both my mom and dad’s side is a mess. I simply removed family from my social medias and don’t reach out/ respond to what they say. It was an easy decision because they never made me feel as if they cared or even loved me. So I’m not gonna try for someone who doesn’t even want me. I even told them that to their face :P If this is a mom/dad/ caretaker thing, then I would take someone else’s advice, cause my story applies to those other than my parents. I know it’s a lot harder if it’s with parents or siblings. Best of luck!
