HCG Question

Cathy

I was pretty happy after my ultrasound today. I am 6 weeks 4 days since LMP and measuring at 6 weeks 1 day. We even got to hear the heartbeat (134 bpm). However, at my last ultrasound a week ago, we had twins, and we have lost the second baby.

Anyway, my question is about HCG doubling and if that can be affected by losing one twin. In the last week, my levels went from about 2500 to 5800 in a week. Not doubling every 24 hours at all. The nurse who called with my results said not to worry because once they can see and measure baby on an ultrasound, it is a better measure of viability than HCG anyway, but I am still worried of course. Does anybody know if the loss of the second baby during the last week can be the cause of not rising as high as typical this past week? Just looking for an explanation that doesn't make me think the worst.
