Should kids have cell phones?

If so, what age is appropriate? Should they pay their own phone bills?

I wouldn’t say it’s about age as much as it is about how much I trust them, how mature they are, what their activities are, etc.

My 9 year old has a cell phone, not everyone’s situation is the same 🤷‍♀️
My husband and I are separated and getting divorced, I needed to be able to take my dog on his night walks and also be in contact with my daughter. I put my earbuds in and call her while I walk him. Or come September when I have a brand new baby there’s a chance she’ll be walking the very short distance to school by herself… I’ll do the same thing and be on the phone with her. Obviously I pay the bill, she’s 9 lol.

Depends on your situation. My 11 year old got one when he was 9. He needed it. He and his sister walk to and from school on their own, and are home alone for about an hour. We don’t have a land line. So, they needed a phone. But not everyone is in the same situation. There’s no blanket rule for this type of decision.

This is highly dependent on how and with who the child spends their time. I think 12-13 is an average age as kids start getting more involved with extra curriculars but there is no one size fits all

No. Mine won’t be getting one till they are grown enough to do so, at 18.

Age depends on your life circumstances. Pay phone bill? Personally I am still on my parents plan, I’m 23 and have a kid. They aren’t concerned about kicking me off and I’m not in a rush to have another bill, so. My fiancé does a prepaid plan. I don’t know how we’re going to handle phones in the future, but if I can afford to pay for his phone/plan, why wouldn’t I?

It depends where they go without an adult. I had to help a boy at the park the other day who had fallen and probably broken his leg. He didn't have a phone so couldn't call anyone. He also didn't know his parents number. But thankfully he knew his address so I went to get his mum who lived nearby. If he'd had a phone it would have really helped.
