Is it common for alcoholics/addicts to leave their SO for someone else?

I was having a discussion with a friend & he said, "They drink & do drugs because they're not happy about their life & the people in it." I said "ok, but what if the family/spouse is very supportive?" , He said " it doesn't matter, if they were happy, they wouldn't drink or do drugs".....my friend had a father who was an addict & deserted the family for a woman he met in a support group. He said "this is common"....

I think happiness is a relative term and means something different to different people. Happy people can do drugs and maybe they do it just because they have a predisposition for addiction or they like that kind of lifestyle. But for someone who cares about an addict whether it be a spouse or a friend or someone else it does become emotionally draining on them because it doesn’t matter how supportive you are of someone, it has to be their choice to stop doing the things they are doing and they have to put in the work to get and stay sober. And you can have all the love and support in the world but that isn’t going to automatically make someone stop doing drugs. And it doesn’t mean they’re doing it because they’re not happy with someone in their life. It could be maybe they’re just not happy with themselves or they have some other mental health problems and they are self medicating with hard drugs. It’s really a personal struggle that the addict has to make the choice to overcome.

People drink and do drugs because they're unhappy with themselves. It's no one else's fault. But yeah I think it is common to leave and be with another addict. Because that's the worst possible idea, and addicts are self destructive and do things that are horrible ideas.

My mom has been a heavy drug user my whole life. I can think of a few guys she dated that was absolutely amazing men, cute charming not dicks financially stable. She cheated on every single one of them. I think after a while she just needed to seek validation from other men. I also know she's done a few things in trade for drugs. I think she's using past trauma as an excuse and just won't move forward. I believe in her still. But really addicts lie and deceive, will swear across someone's grave even. I don't believe my mom has always been unhappy, she is such a bright bubbly soul, kind generous person, will give you the shirt off her back. She just doesn't make the best decisions. It's not just her fault, it really is the drugs(depending on the drug, in my case methamphetamine), they alter your mind and create a false reality. I can't even tell the difference between when she is lying or being honest. But yes it's common for someone to deceive like that

I don’t think its common as such but i do think they have the addiction as a connection and addicts that do get together in such a way will stay addicted much longer because they both share a lack of will power and are more likely to tempt each other to drink
