Child studies ethical or not?

So a video popped up for me on Instagram that’s in French and I wanted to set the tone here for a debate. Well sort of.

Ok so anyway. I wanted to ask we’re all studies on babies and children back in the day actually ethical? Countless studies have been done in many many different ways and the variables were sometimes dangerous as hell.
I understand without them we would have less data as to use for the future. So do the ends justify the means? Is there a gray area?
Did the people doing these experiments not think or care about the long term struggles the person would face? Was there no moral alarm going off in some of these cases?

Oh absolutely not! Some of the studies they did back in the day were crimes against humanity. Even classic studies like The Stanford Prison Experiment couldn’t ethically happen today.

I think there is a way of doing studies on children without actually inflicting the trauma on them. For example, studying children who have found to be neglected or abused, without further inflicting this pain onto them. 
It is obviously completely unethical to fabricate abusive environments in the name of science. There are enough messed up people out there to study without needing to create more

Any experiment on children is unethical, physical or mental, yet we need data for science, especially medical data, otherwise we wouldn’t have medication, treatments, or vaccines for children. I suppose it comes down to: what is more important? 
The data? The progress it brings? 
Or the individual children’s well-being? 
It’s a gray area for me, because where would we be without childhood vaccines and medicine?

Everything about this is heartbreaking and just makes me feel ill. My parents worked with a lot of kids who were physically abused and/or neglected (also abuse) when I was a kid/teenager and all any of us wanted to do was hug those babies and help them. I cannot imagine 1) creating an abusive atmosphere for the purpose of "research," or 2) observing children in abusive and neglectful environments without somehow intervening. I couldn't. Children should be loved and protected, not lab rats. My heart hurts on their behalf. Why are we allowing children's innocence to be stolen in the name of research and how will this "research" actually do anything to help these children's lives improve? Why must humanity be so very cruel, especially to its most vulnerable members?

Did I read this wrong? I thought it said that there was nothing that could legally be done to help these children because it didn’t fit CPS’s criteria. So by studying them they’re only observing them - not causing additional issues for these kids in this study, no?

Not they were never "ethical" and the scientists preforming these experiments were focused on the "bigger picture" then actually caring about the well-being of an innocent child. Unfortunately there are a lot of limitations in psychology because of ethical factors but I rather not understand the mind then abuse a person.
