Anyone refusing the IV?

Question

I’m not even sure what the IV is .. is it just saline / fluids? If anyone is going to opt out of it can you tell me why AND if you are someone who thinks it’s very necessary can you tell me why? Thank you!

Before you reject or accept anything you definitely need to be familiar with whatever you are accepting/objecting too! Reach out to your OB/midwife if you have any questions. 
I’m not sure what you mean by “refusing the IV”? An IV drip is just a method of delivering medication and nutrients to a patient. Generally speaking an IV drip is just a bag of saline solution and medications/nutrients are added to address the needs of the patient. 
 
There are multitude of reasons as to why you might be hooked up to an IV drip. If you are severely dehydrated you will be hooked up to an IV drip. If you have any kind of infection or test positive for Group B strep you will also be administered antibiotics via an IV drip. It wouldn’t be a wise idea to refuse any of these treatments as the outcomes can be far worse for you and baby than if you accept treatment.

At my hospital, which is very low intervention friendly, they still request you get a hep-lock when you get admitted. It’s the just the needle of an iv capped off with no cords/meds. In the hand so you can still move and do whatever you want. It’s just there in case of emergencies. If something happened and the nurses needed to administer meds quickly, like pitocin after birth in the case of hemorrhage, they can just add the line versus trying to get the needle into dehydrated veins. I don’t like intervention stuff at all, but even this I get.

I personally will be getting it because after delivery they give me pain meds in my IV. During labor it is usually just fluids to keep you hydrated. Some doctors give the moms pitocin after delivery to contract the uterus back down but you can decline that if you want.

Definitely talk to your ob about why they might want to do one. I have only been induced so I have always needed one BUT with my first there was meconium in my water when it broke and I needed IV antibiotics because I developed a fever.  I certainly wouldn't have wanted them to put the IV line in at that point in labor!  I have also needed saline and a dextrose drip because my blood sugar dropped too low. All that is on top of the pitocin that they gave me for the actual induction.
