Completely rejected

There's this boy I like at my school. He's my best friends guy best friend. We have been texting but I can't tell if he likes me or not. He's one of those guys who is just kind of mean for no reason. Like he can be cool to talk to but he always has to throw in something rude or sarcastic. My best friend said he has an abusive home life. At lunch today we were all sitting next to each other and she asked if I liked anyone. Me and him made eye contact and I said yes and I hope he likes me back... This guy says "You might be disappointed." Then continued drinking his milk shake! I felt so embarrassed and I think everyone at the table heard it! I could be overdramatic but it felt that way. Ugh. I so humiliating.

Edit: It's kind of hard to go about my day like he doesn't exist when he's literally my best friends best friend and is always around her.
