How far can you dilate without contractions?

At 35 weeks I was 3 cm dilated and 80% effaced and super uncomfortable. Now I am 37 weeks and been a lot more active and they preformed another cervical check and I was 90% effaced and 4 cm dilated and my doctor told me just wait until contractions start or my water breaks.

I feel great. Sure I've have Braxton hicks here or there and pelvic pressure. Pains at night like everyone else but curious how far can you dilate before contractions start or your water breaks 🤔
