Should parents be give preference for time off at work during the holidays?

Should people with children be given first consideration during the holidays when it comes to scheduling and getting days off? I feel like my spending time with my family is just as important as then spending it with their children, yet I see many places that give parents the days off and make the employees with children or spouses work the holidays.

Having a crotch droppling doesn't make you special, millions of people all over the world do it. Why should my time be any more important then a single persons just because I chose to have kids?

I don't think people with children should automatically get it off. Where I used to work they did and the rest of us without kids would have to work it wasn't fair we wanted to spend time with our families as well

No. Having children is a choice. It may be more important for you to be a kid but it is not fair to penalize other people for choices you made.

When I was working last year before having my daughter it royally sucked having to battle for time off on holidays. I ALWAYS had PTO in bulk because I never abused it. Yet every year when I'd submit my time off request in AUGUST to take off for CHRISTMAS the supervisors always got shitty with me because they said I "always" got Christmas off. Well yes, I sure as hell did because I had the pto for it?? Most of the people I use to work with always fell sick on Mondays and Friday's somehow, always had some miraculous illness the day of an assumed massive work load, etc. 🙄 so of course they never had the pto come Christmas time. I don't miss it at all. I can travel whenever the hell I please now that I'm a sahm. But for the people who work, kids or not, first come first serve all the way!

But I DO feel employees should. I mean, if you make a parent miss Christmas morning with their kids without a VERY important reason for doing so, you're kind of a butt.

Nope. When I was working retail people used to complain all the time that they didn't get time off (we all got Christmas Day off) they wanted because of their kids. You know what? That is life and no one cares you have children. You are hired to do a job, so do it or get a new one. Is basically what you are told from day one.

Plus they had what is known as "Black out dates" meaning you couldn't take time off between those dates. Most of the time it was from Black Friday until the second week of January.

Where I work now, it goes off of seniority. If you haven't been there long you still get all federal and most provincial holidays off but how long you take off is up to how long you have been there.

I think so, for things like Christmas, easter, Halloween evening, etc. If my coworkers with kids can't get the night off to take their kid trick or treating or can't spend easter morning with them because of work, I will ALWAYS take or trade their shift. When I was little my mom always either had halloween off or worked a day shift so she could take us trick or treating, and she would work Christmas eve and new years day so she could have Christmas off. By all means parents with kids should have those days off before a 20 year old student like myself. I can't believe how many people would want a kid to miss Christmas with their parent so they can have the day off O.o

I am happy to do what I can so parents can have holidays with their kids with in reason. But I also have a military brother who rarely makes it home and I have elderly grandparents who won't be with us much longer and it's important that everyone gets time with their family sometimes. It should be as fair as we can make it, but moms and dads shouldn't be exempt. I have a family too.
