Advance Peace…thoughts?

Question

So, I came across this article today, and I thought it was amazing. Obviously some don’t agree, so I was curious what thoughts you may have. I actually got a little choked up reading it. In the long run, do you think this will curb violence? Would you want this implemented in your area? What, if any, potential issues do you see with this? Etc…

I understand why it works and why it is effective. I understand why it is viewed as a positive, or a great “return on investment” to reduce violent crime. I understand that it is better then young people rotting in our jail system and a method of rehabilitation that seems to be resonating with young offenders.
I think it speaks to the direction we are taking as a society that the solution is to pay people to keep them from being harmful to themselves or others. So many people have terrible circumstances that they do through and yet manage not to become violent or break laws. It says that financial motivation is more impactful then the general interest in being good and decent humans, and having boundaries in what a person will do to create a life for themselves. I can believe their parents failed them in instilling a baseline sense of values. I can also hope that the process does create that value system in the end.
I think it is possible to understand why this works and why it is being done, while also being very disappointed in the need for it and not celebrate it as a success.

Honestly, sure, but also….like….stipends don’t replace affordable costs of living, which is one reason why communities struggle. 
I also don’t see this as sustainable long term. It’s a bandaid solution to a crumbling system.

I think it’s interesting the people most opposed are law enforcement who make money putting people in jails fb politicians who get positions based on rhetoric around cleaning up cities and being hard on crime.
I think this is a great starting point and incredibly important as many reasons people turn to gangs is because they offer protection, income, food and housing. We also have to come face to face with the fact that inner city schools purposefully lack proper funding to engage children in school and are often populated by brand new teachers who so not yet have the skills to provide adequate support for students. Essentially a part of the school to prison pipeline. This offers reformation before violations and can decrease crime.
But again, this is only the first stepping stone. More need to take place

I think if it’s actually interactive and monitored by people who care, it could be pretty awesome. Especially for kids who need a chance…anyone who wasn’t serious about it wouldn’t last long. Helping people and saving lives is worth a try

Pay someone just not to shoot people, no. The article alluded to there being some requirements beyond that, but didn't specify. Personally I could get behind it if it required participation in programs that helped them finish school, learn a trade, or other things that could actually make them believe they have a shot at staying alive and earning money outside of a gang. I'm certainly not an expert, but I've read more than once that many kids become involved in gangs because they feel they need something (protection, money, family) that the gang would provide that they don't otherwise have. Fill those needs.
