Can someone try and explain this

Hi guys my bf and I have been on a break for a week now where we aren’t dating but will occasionally exchange a message. He says the reason for the break is because he wants some space to himself but he’s been very confusing and has caused me to not know where I stand with him anymore and he refuses to talk about it until after our high school exams which finish 10th December. Can you guys tell if this message means he wants to get back together or if he thinks our relationship was bad because we never fight or anything like this.
