Why is this??

I heard somewhere that baby girls have better chance of surviving than baby boys if born extremely prematurely (before 28th week) 
Does anyone know if the difference in survival rates is significant and why is this even the case?

Yes. Premature birth outcome is way better for girls than it is for boys. I have a 24 weeker girl. And now 27 weeks with a boy and terrified. The other day in my appointment my on said  the same thing once again that boys have much worse outcome of extreme premature birth. He made a joke that if it’s not for the women, men would be wiped out from the face of the earth by now as a species.

It’s more common in animals that the males are weaker and the females have more drive to thrive.

Yes. My baby came out at 36w, and the ob there came and td me this before i started pushing.
Really not want to hear that when you are a ftm, and pushing out a boy a little early

I've never heard of that. The only thing I can think is that it's a continuation of "girls mature earlier than boys."

My mom told me this growing up. I always found it interesting. I was born at 26wks and she said if I were a boy I probably wouldn’t have made it. The OBs at the hospital told her premature girls have a higher chance of survival than premature boys, but that was back in the 80’s… I dunno if this has changed since then with advances in medical equipment and science.
