What were/are your kids speaking like at 4yr old?

Hi all. I was wondering if at 4 years old your kids were speaking fluently and clearly like adults? My child just turned 4 a few days ago. He speaks a lot but sometimes strangers do not understand a few things that he says. I keep getting asked by extended families “shouldn’t he be speaking fluently and clearly by now?”.

You should be able to understand 100% of what he’s saying, strangers will get about 90%

I’ve known 4 year olds I understand well, and 4year olds I have no idea what they are saying. I wouldn’t worry too much since they just turned 4, but it never hurts to mention it to her doc

My brother inlaws daughter speaks in a way where it seems like she just learnt how to. Her mother babys her too much and she watches these youtube kids who over exaggerate speach. Sometimes we just dont understand what she says unless her mum tells us. (All his kids are like that)
My sister inlaws daughter speaks clearly with proper vocabulary and correct sentences. When spoken to, she is spoken to in proper manner which I guess helped with her speaking. No one babies anything when talking to her. (All her kids were like this too)
They're both 5.

My first was a pretty clear speaker from the beginning. Even at 2y people understood most of what she was saying. I don't think that's typical but I would think a 4yo should speak pretty clearly.

My daughter just turned 4 and speaks full complete sentences and is clear easy to understand

Mine spoke in complete sentences and others understood her fine at 4. If it’s a concern ask the pediatrician.

Have  you considered getting a speech assessment? If people aren’t able to understand him, a speech assessment may be in order.

My nephew spoke full sentences but some words weren’t super clear. It still sounded baby talkish.

No my son is 5 and doesn't yet but he has a speech delay and been in therapy since 2 so I'm used to telling people what he says even tho I hate it bc many other kids do speak very clear

My daughter was earlier than 4 like crazy 😳😳 she has older cousins and I would talk and narrate everything I did to her. But I wouldn’t compare it to anyone else’s kid. Sometimes it’s just not clear enough and fast so people are like what??! Don’t worry what strangers say and your family can shut up tbh.
