How do debit cards work?

I know nothing about these things (yes I’ve googled) but I want insight from actual people who use cards. Same with credit cards, how does it all work?

You put your money in bank. And then pay with a debit card, the store takes the correct amount from your money that you have put on your bank account. 🤷‍♀️
Credit card does the same, but you don't have to put money in bank, you pay with banks momey, and later you get a bill, what says how much you owe to your bank. It is basically living off of money you do not have.

If you are new to this I would start with a debit card, ask them to set it up to be declined in the event of an overdraft/trying to spend more than you have. It will be declined instead of going through and charging you fees for going over your balance. Use the banks app on your phone frequently to keep track of how much is in there, get used to managing that. 
Eventually do work up to a credit card, having a good credit score will help you but I would wait and make sure you are ready to pay it off all the time and know more about it.

To add what everyone else is saying there’s also something called a secured credit card when you don’t have credit, you pay a cash deposit which represents your line of credit, and you paid in full each month before the due date, to establish credit. Credit is your ability to be given money and showing your ability that you can pay it off and be responsible with the funds that you were given. It shows your history of how you use money And whether or not you were responsible with it, it shows lateness is, it shows outstanding debt that hasn’t been paid, it shows everything, jobs that you’ve had, and any time that your credit is used, it shows up on your credit report. Like people who have not paid medical bills, or any other debt like your student loans,￼ etc. They get reported to the credit bureau’s, there are three credit bureau’s, experience, Trans Union, and Equifax. A debit card is similar to a credit card however it’s your own money that you have deposited in the bank, majority of the time it doesn’t establish credit, because you’re using your own money not money that was lent to you. However if you chronically have overdrafts on your account, or leave the account in the negative, I believe they can reported to the credit companies or not allow you to continue to use their bank and close the account. Overdrafts or when you don’t have enough money in the bank account and they called your account to be in the negative, every bank has a set amount that they charge for overdraft fees, sometimes it’s $35, $30, it varies by the bank basically it’s a penalty for not having enough money in the bank. Some banks charge a monthly fee to have the account open, some banks it’s free checking. Money that is left in the bank, usually earns interest, but the interest that is earned, is usually reported on your taxes at the end of the year they will cut you a 1099. 1099’s are monies that people track for monies that they gave to you to reduce they are tax liability. Just like with a job, when you’re on the books, they cut you a W-2 to allocate where their monies were spent to the government. If you have anymore questions please let me know￼

A debit card is using your own money and balance available (wages etc). A credit card is using a line of credit that you pay off in full monthly or at a interest % each month. Essentially borrowing from the bank.
