What is "Texas food" and what is "American food"

This is for people who don't live in America. My friend is currently in a long distance relationship with a guy from Syria. He lives in Turkey now but that is besides the point. They were skyping and I heard her ask what he was about to go do and he said "I'm about to go get some Texas food with my friends." I couldn't help but laugh because what is "Texas food?" I asked him since I'm from the US and I don't understand what he was referring to as Texas food and he said "you know, those flat circle bread things with meat inside and green flakes and spicy juice" it took me awhile to realize that he was describing a taco lol. So to them, Mexican food is Texas food. When I think of Texas food I think of ribs, fried chicken, chicken fried steak. Not tacos, enchiladas, or burritos. So my question is, what is Texas food and what is American food for those of you who don't live in America

Tex Mex is totally a thing. The Mexicans in my fAmily all lived and grew up in Texas for a while and their Mexican food is so different from my husbands family's cooking who is like straight from Mexico. 
I thought I was having authentic Mexican food all my life 😂

Probably referring to Tex-Mex. If you eat Mexican food up north, it's likely gonna suck in comparison to Tex-Mex lol

I don't know what I would consider American food. I usually lump all "normal" food like burgers and pizza in as American food but pizza is obviously not American and I don't know where burgers are from.

I live on the border of OK and TX... There is southern style food, yank food and mexican. If you go into cities there's all kinds of foods, but I've never heard of Texas food lol

I live in Texas, Texas food is Tex Mex, enchiladas, tacos, fajitas... You know, all the food that helped me gain 20 lbs when I moved here.

I live in Texas. Texas food is like country fried steak and mashed potatoes and cornbread and classic southern food like that and American food is like hamburgers hot dogs things like that

I actually just had this conversation with some cousins I was visiting in Mexico.
Because America is such a melting pot, there are all types of food here. The stereotypical kind would be burgers, hot dogs, BBQ. But most dishes are labeled like "Chinese-American," "Italian-American," and so on.
As for "Texas" food (I'm from Texas, family is from Mexico), he was definitely talking about Tex-Mex. A hybrid of Mexican food and the local Texan ingredients that lack many authentic Mexican ingredients. Almost 50% of Texans are Hispanic, I believe, so it's understandable that Tex-Mex would be considered a stereotypical Texan food.
