When do I see a midwife?

Hi all- we are in the process of choosing where we want to give birth; looking at a birthing center, midwife practice at a hospital, and homebirth. My question is- when do I need to have my first prenatal appointment with a midwife? I'm 5 weeks.

Call sooner than later to make an appt.
Most places are booked weeks in advance. Better to call and ask them when they want to see you for the first time. Each practice has different procedures.

I called at 8 weeks and had first appointment at 11.5

The midwife practice I used wouldn't schedule an appointment before 8 weeks.

Practices limit the number of women they'll take per month, and depending on where you live, they can book up. I researched between 6-8 weeks and my first appointment was my 10 week. That was probably a little early, but I'm a planner.

I toured my birthing center and asked all my questions at an open house. They don't start care until 12 weeks, I'm going in for this first appointment on January 5th which is actually 13 weeks for me. :)

I didn't start looking for a midwife/birth center until I was about 14 weeks (I had No prenatal care at all before this). I would start looking now just to book them, but my midwife doesn't start prenatal care until the 16th week. Everywhere I called was already booked because they can only take so many mommies a month to ensure they don't get multiples in labor since they can't be in two places. Luckily, I found a great midwife that is just down the street from me. The booked midwife recommended her to me. But that was pure luck. You can start interviewing and make your choice calmly.
