Somewhat. I think it’s likely Russia will back down if US and NATO troops are deployed at the border of Ukraine, though. Putin and his regime have always talked a lot of game without doing much of anything, and Putin has said he wants to step down to “retire” anyway. I think he thinks this may be his way out... one last gesture of Big Talk.

No. I do think that conflict (as in armed conflict) is a possibility, but it will not escalate to a spill over effect into NATO's Eastern Flank. 
I do not think it will reach any of the NATO territories. In 2014 NATO and the EU protested, cut some established cooperation or activities (the NATO Russia Council for example), placed some (let's be honest-light) sanctions, but no real impact to Russia happened. And as long as Putin stays out of NATO territory, he has nothing to fear.
What Putin wants is to keep what he considers to be Russia's sphere of influence. This is what was previously considered to be the soviet block. This is why he has been promoting this Eurasian Economic Union, why his claims basically boil down to making sure NATO does not expand its Eastern Flank, why the Crimea crisis in 2014.
Also he is highly opportunistic. He prefers to attack 1) when least expected (see Georgia in 2008 and Crimea in 2014) and 2) when it suits him politically. Putin favors a plebiscitary democracy (autocracy). In this model, a leader has to he strong, powerful because the people bind their identity and pride to his success. Every time he invented an internal or an external enemy, he consolidated power (early '00s -internal threat-his "fight" against the old corrupt oligarchs, 2008 -external threat- Georgia, 2014: -external threat- Crimea, 2018 -internal threat-protection of Russian family values (anti-LGBTQ laws)). It did not matter to him how the outside world perceived those actions; his approval ratings were above 70% every time, the kind of supremajority he needs, for the kind of leadership model he follows.
Also, what he is looking for is to be respected and established unquestionably as a global force. In reality, the competing powers are US and China now. Not as it was during the Cold War. He wants to change that. He wants Russia to be perceived as calling the shots. This why for him, Biden wanting to talk to him, the optics of it, the US coming to Russia, not the contrary, is a win in his view.
This is also why he was active in Afghanistan (covertly), Syria, why now the Wagner group is involved in Mali (where the French supposedly where the leading assisting force in the last decade), why it was important for him that it was Russia and no other nation that played the peacemaker between Armenia and Azerbaijan (even though Turkey wanted to as well they were successfully put aside). 
As a side note, right now, there is a case before the ICJ introduced by Ukraine against Russia. It is really about the Annexation of Crimea, but the legal basis of the arguments are Russia's (alleged) violation of the International Convention for the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism and of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. Russia argued the Court did not have jurisdiction to hear the case. The Court disagreed and is looking into the merits. Russia is sending a message on all fronts in and outside the Court.

We are in the beginning phases of WW3, no doubt. This isn’t just about Russia and Ukraine and the US. There’s much more in play here. 
The food shortages and economic collapse of the US and countries around the world will just help escalde things. Civil wars will also ensue with scarcity and continued mandates.
