IUI before IVF ?!

My husband and I have been trying for almost 2 years. We were planning to go straight to IVF and were told insurance would cover 15k however we were just informed we were denied by insurance due to not trying IUI first. With IUI we were told it will not improve our success by much. Has any one had success with iui? I am 35 and really don’t think I should waste time on 3 rounds of IUI before trying IVF so we are considering just paying for IVF out of pocket. Does anyone have any advice or thoughts??

If you have the money I would move straight to IVF. I did 5 iui’s and all failed. I know it works for some, but I wish I would have just moved straight to IVF. I wasted a year of time and my body went through hell on those meds. Iui success rates are much lower when compared to IVF.

If it is due to egg quality you may be able to appeal your insurance with a letter from your doctor saying IVF is medically necessary. 
Call your insurance and ask about appeals.

Plenty of people have success with IUI. I would try the three since they are covered before jumping to IVF. We paid out of pocket for everything so I wish we skipped the IUI since they were expensive and didn’t work but we would have always wondered if the easier less invasive less expensive IUI route would have worked. My advice is to knock out all three back to back months then move on. One positive with IUI is that you’ll learn quickly how your body responds to medication. You can even ask your RE if you can try one cycle with injectable meds (same ones you will use for IVF) so when the time comes you will know how your body responds and how much medicine you will need. IUI can actually be very helpful depending on the fertility issues. If it’s an egg quality/quantity issue then it’s not as beneficial. But if there’s some minor male factor it might. Plus if it’s a gateway to having insurance approve the costs it could be worth it. Does the costs of IUI reduce the $15,000 benefits?

We had successful IUI on 1st try. Currently 15wks along now. . We were told to try IUI 1st (3-6cycles) before moving up  to IVF since i have endometriosis and husband only had 1% good sperm. Most Insurance will cover a few cycles, however ours did not. Our clinic charged $1500 for the full IUI package, and meds were about $450.
