Moving to a new city advice

What steps did you take consecutively to move to another city (or state). Did you have a job in that city or a place to live lined up first? How long did it take you? Were you happy with that choice or have regret. I have a new opportunity to further my education and don't actually know what steps I should take to move. I don't want to find a job in the new city but not live there OR get a place there with no solid job. What plans did you make in advance that helped you have a smooth transition?
