Cough only at certain times?

My 2 year old has a horrible cough, it’s so bad that it almost wakes him up and it almost makes him sick. But weirdly enough, he is only coughing early in the morning when first waking up, or when he’s about to go to sleep, AND while he is sleeping it is at it’s worst. Anyone know what this could be? He has NO other symptoms.

Post nasal drip maybe. Lying down /sleeping tends to irritate the throat when you've got one and it causes coughing at the times you mention.

For my first, a night time cough was her main symptom of asthma. It was weird—she’d cough all night long, like neither of us slept for a long time, but would be totally fine all day long. Once we got asthma meds it went away (unless she gets sick then it comes back for a few weeks). So I’d say talk to your pediatrician for sure.
